A life of a college student is one that is constantly busy. You do not need to be midway into the school year and missing something that you need on the spot. College bookstores always overcharge, and who wants to spend extra money during this economic time. Weather you live in a dorm or your parents basement this guide will help you be prepared to start your upcoming semester.

The most essential item every college student needs is a computer. I wont say a laptop or a desktop, I will just say a computer. The varieties that exist out there are endless. My suggestion is to find a computer that can hold a ton of memory. As a college student writing papers is required. It can help if you keep these papers together for future years. You never know when you might need to look back, and every bit helps. Along with a computer, I would suggest a printer. Though emailing papers may be the new fad, some professors still want papers turned in. Having a printer can help avoid a long wait in the school computer room where printing can become impossible.

Notebooks, may be old school but effective. Taking notes keeps you from having to read the books. A trick I learned since I have Adult ADHD. If you pay attention in class, write effective and detailed notes, you can write a whole paper and never open a book. I am not saying you should do it, in fact I feel that reading can help you a great deal for a variety of reasons. Yet, when you have six or seven classes, and extra curricular activities, along with a job. Reading can become the last thing on your to do list. I would suggest four five subject notebook, to hold you over for the year. Enough space to take notes, and enough books for two semesters.

A binder, and an organizer would be useful. In my freshman year I received tons of handouts, or worksheets. Professor tend to give those out, in my opinion to help you focus more. Not so much lecture, do it yourself, cheat sheets; these things are a must keep. Yet folders are so first grade, and you do not want to feel like a child. So invest in a binder and a hole puncher. An organizer helps keep you up to date with what you have done, and what you need to do. It may be the only way to keep you all together in a college setting. Though syllabi may help with the different course aspect, how often do your refer to that during the year. Place it all in an organizer, and keep the dates together.

Writing tools, printing ink, locker, and a scientific calculator. All are essential items, even if you do not think so. All college students need a pen, and if you have printer ink is important. A locker can be used if you go to the campus gym, or pool. You may even need it for a class, so buy early and buy frugal. A scientific calculator is a useful tool you may need for your math or science class. So keep it close, you may not need it at first but always good to have.

This is my school guide for all of you back to school college students. Remember a computer, printer, four five subject notebooks, a binder, hole puncher, organizer, writing tools, printing ink, locker, and a scientific calculator will help you this year with all of your college needs. Having a dictionary would be useful as well. I would suggest purchasing these items from a Staples, or Amazon. These items should be bought now while all the back to school sales are going on. Save money, buy early, and have a great school year.

If you are searching for a new refrigerator, you may be thinking that there are only a couple of manufacturers that you can choose from. While these manufacturers are the more famous companies, there are several other companies out there that have been producing high-quality refrigerators for many years. Bosch is definitely one of these companies. If you are looking for a refrigerator that features the best exterior design, as well as innovative cooling technologies, than I would highly recommend going for a Bosch refrigerator. The Bosch 20.19 Cu. Ft. Evolution 500 Series Side-by-Side Refrigerator, Model: B20CS50SNW, is one of the coolest refrigerators because it has integrated a unique exterior design with flawless inner functions.

Main Product Features:

Within this Bosch refrigerator, you will find some of the coolest technologies, but the real benefit of having this refrigerator is the overall design, both on the exterior as well as the interior. With a smooth finish, Black is my favorite, this refrigerator has an awesome appeal. The handles almost stretch throughout the entire length of the refrigerator, which is a design feature that only the highest-quality refrigerators share.

Another great feature about this refrigerator is the fact that it is a counter depth refrigerator. Basically what this means is the refrigerator will rest flush against your counters, creating a smooth, built-in appearance. The depth of this refrigerator is 24-inches, which is the standard depth for all counters. However, you need to make sure that you do not have any counters above the refrigerator because it is slightly taller than your standard model. At 70 ½-inches, you will need to ensure that you can fit this refrigerator within your kitchen. Another great design feature is the hidden hinges, which is yet another high-end design.

The SuperCool temperature management system is one of the best within the industry. This feature allows you to quickly, and easily, cool off your refrigerator to its lowest temperature setting. You will use this feature when you have new groceries to place within your refrigerator. All you have to do is push a single button, and the refrigerator lowers the temperature for a short time, so that the new food items are able to cool off quicker than before. This will prolong the taste of your foods as well as help prolong their lifespan. The SuperFreeze function has the same concept, except it is within the freezer section.

Product Price:

This refrigerator comes with a multitude of other features, and I highly suggest going to your local appliance retail store and checking this refrigerator out in person. You can expect to find a price tag that averages $1,750.

As the hot sunny days of summer change into the cool breezes of early fall, we turn from grilling simple meals to the more substantial fare that is lovingly known as comfort food. One of the most popular comfort foods is the pot roast. Hearty beef that cooks all day in its own juices served with a side of mashed potatoes screams comfort. You’ll feel comforted, too, with my recipe for the best pot roast ever.

I created this recipe quite by accident during the frenzied rush of a weekday morning. With barely enough time to think, I yanked a chunk of beef from the refrigerator, seasoned it well and tossed it in the Crock Pot. I then scoured the pantry for things to throw in with it. Eight hours later we dined on the most flavorful, incredible pot roast we’d ever had.

Want to know how to make the best pot roast ever? Read on!

It all starts with the beef.

For the best pot roast ever, I recommend using Certified Angus Beef® (CAB). I’ve experimented with several types of beef, but Certified Angus Beef offers the best flavor, hands down.

Ever wonder why CAB beef is so special? It’s hand-selected, -raised and -fed by generations of American farmers and ranchers. In fact, less than 8% of all beef is good enough for CAB brand’s high standards.

All CAB beef is subject to ten very strict quality specifications: three specifications for marbling and maturity; three specifications for a uniform steak size; finally, four specifications for appearance and tenderness. For more details, be sure to visit the Ten Quality Specifications page on the CAB website.

The Recipe

Two-Ingredient Best Pot Roast Ever

1 Certified Angus Beef boneless chuck eye roast

1 Envelope dry onion soup mix (any brand)

Dry red wine, 3 or 4 glugs around the Crock Pot

Generously season both sides of the roast with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place seasoned beef in Crock Pot. Sprinkle dry soup mix over beef. Add wine. Cook according to your schedule.

Best Pot Roast Ever Tips

*It’s incredibly important to properly season the roast with kosher salt & pepper. Even though there’s sodium in the dry soup mix, it doesn’t replace proper seasoning.

*Use of a CAB (Certified Angus Beef) roast is important in this recipe. Watch for it to go on sale, then stock-up. When on sale in the mid-West United States, CAB chuck eye roasts sell for $1.99/pound.

*Inexpensive dry red wine is fine. Just taste it. If you can’t drink it, don’t cook with it.

*The pot roast will be delicious whether you cook it on high or low. Cook according to your schedule.

*if you want to add vegetables to the Crock Pot, go right ahead.

Are you hungry for the best pot roast ever? I hope you and your family enjoy this simple, flavorful recipe.

The Walgreens deals are finally up!  Sorry for the delay… I have been traveling since 5am this morning! So much fun! I did have WiFi on the plane, so I definitely took advantage of that. And we arrived safely in Boise a few hours ago… BUT without our luggage. However, the positive, we got refunded all of the money we paid to check our bags, so I am definitely not complaining.

If you are a newbie to Walgreens shopping, make sure to check out my Walgreens Store guide. …And if the coupon jargon below starts to confuse you, take some time to read through the Coupon Newbie section.

Also, as most of you know, Walgreens released a corporate coupon policy a couple months ago… finally! You can view the policy here. Be sure to print a copy and bring it with you when you shop in case any issues should arise. You can also now print Walgreens Instant Value Coupons online here. *NOTE: If you can find the monthly coupon booklet in-store, save your printer ink.

HAPPY SHOPPING!

Want to create your own custom printable shopping list?!
Simply click on the printer icon to the right of the post title and then follow the instructions to easily remove portions of the weekly deals that do not interest you. Then print and take with you to the store!

HAPPY SHOPPING!

There are some televisions that truly demand your attention. These televisions are usually some of the most technologically advanced, and most user-friendly, televisions of them all. Although it is very intriguing to think about owning one of these televisions, but it is here the problem lies.

Which one do you choose? Well, this can be difficult, because when you are dealing with TV’s that are of this caliber, you have so many features, you really have to realize which ones are perfect for you and your family. What if I told you that I have found a high-end television, but every feature it had was usable and actually worth while? I am talking about the Pioneer 50″ 1080p Flat-Panel Plasma HDTV, Model: PDP-5010FD.

This television really is absolutely stunning. The main reason why I love this HDTV, is because all of its features work seamlessly together, and add up to one amazing plasma television. One of the features that I love about this television, is a feature that can be found one several TV’s.

I am talking about the 1080p display, which will give you the absolute best in picture quality. On this 50″ screen, you will be absolutely blown away by how clear and precise all the images are. Another feature that is really awesome is the 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, however, you also get various other viewing modes to choose from. Some of these modes include zoom, cinema, wide, 4:3 as well as a true 3:2 pulldown mode that imitates the sensation of actual film.

This television really keeps all of its major features on the inside, working behind the scenes. There are countless “systems” and “technologies” that are working every time you turn your television on in order to give you a flawless viewing experience.

Some of these features include Optimum Mode, which literally changes the brightness of the screen depending on the lighting conditions in your viewing room, After-image reduction, which basically reduces the flaws that come with making “video” and gives you a more perfect image, and there is also a 3D comb filter, which literally “filters” in only the finest of details.

As you can see, this television was made to look fantastic. However, how does this plasma TV sound? Well, it sounds absolutely breathtaking. With this television you get two two-way 17W detachable speakers, both of which come with a digital amplifier, which actually recreates the sound of being at the movie theater. With the speakers, you also are getting FOCUS, SRS WOW and the TruBass Surround Sound audio features. This television will sound unlike anything else you have ever heard before.

This television is definitely not for the weak at heart. If you are looking for a plasma HDTV that will utterly blow your mind, than this is the TV for you. However, it is one the pricy side – of course – if you are planning on running out and purchasing this television, be expected to spend an average of $5,000.00 on this television. Yes, it is quite an expensive price tag, however, once you see this television in action and learn about ALL of its various features and functions, than you will understand why you wouldn’t expect it to be any less.

Knowing what to wear to a black-tie wedding is easy; knowing what to wear for most every other wedding can be a challenge. Especially, if you’re a male wedding guest who wants to look his absolute best, in the most up to date winter wedding outfit for the occasion. Following is a guide to what’s trending in mens suits, which translates to winter wedding fashions for men guests at a wedding. Included, also, is where to get this year’s trendy looks for men.

Winter Wedding Fashion Style for Men ( Hugo Boss )

It’s been said Hugo Boss suits are cut more for the thinner, tall man. This year’s winter cuts for Boss Black Menswear is no exception. Clean, streamlined tailoring and slim cuts describe what’s trending from Boss for the winter.

Strong splashes of red, such as on a 100% silk tie coupled with a bright red collar on an otherwise solid white 100% cotton shirt add brilliance to a 100% virgin wool singlebreasted suit this year from Hugo Boss. Finish the look with a 100% calfskin belt and 100% calfskin shoes, and styling is what you’ll be to, at, and from a winter wedding this year.

Visit the Hugo Boss store at 10 Columbus Circle #106, New York, New York or call 212-485-1900 to talk to the fashion experts about the look described above, and they’ll know about what you’re describing-the trendy look from Hugo Boss for the fall/winter. Talk them up, if you like, about another particular Boss suit ensemble you’re looking to wear to a wedding this winter. Click here to go to Hugo Boss online.

Winter Wedding Fashion Style for Men ( Armani )

While the only-underwear clad Beckhams may be getting all the attention for Armani these days, my lil’ lady says “Armani suits are dreamy and make men look like men.”

How much more so is her statement apropos this year, since men’s suits, in general, are trending away from the manorexic and back to where they belong: masculinity.

That goes double if you appreciate late 1920s styling, since Armani’s Fall/Winter campaign is all about going back to the decade to where modern dress of both men and women can be traced back.

While certainly more sophisticated in approach and execution in modern times, today’s Armani suits or wedding outfits for men sure as shooting beckon back to when men started dressing down in the 20s to what we know call dressing up. Not that it’s too much of a stretch when it comes to mens suits, anyhow. Yet, this year’s mens suits certainly are making a bigger move or changing more than what they usually do. This year’s Flapper Dresses for women are another story.

Click here to see a little bit of Armani’s Fall/Winter look. Click here to go to Armani’s site.

Winter Wedding Fashion Style for Men (Trend Overview)

Men’s fall/winter look this year in suits is one that not only gets back to the masculine man, but for the above-mentioned fashion house all the way back to the confidence men exhibited in the late 1920s. Vivid reds, blues and green contrast the classical fall/winter seasonal shades of muted grey, blue, black. Perhaps, the extra bright colors coupled with the back to the masculinity of men is the fashion houses’ way of reacting to the precariousness of the current economic climate going into a new decade.

Apple TV, the small box that allows users to stream media from the Internet to a TV; unfortunately, that is all the Apple TV is, for the most part anyway. The physical design is clean and surprisingly small and it is only a quarter the size of the original Apple TV unit. I suppose that it why it is one of the only Apple products that does not suffer from Price Shock and one of the only tech products that does not cost more because it is small, since it retails at only $99.

Hardware & Design Basics

The Apple TV is a tiny little thing, but it is sleek looking, as most Apple products are, and it weighs only .09 ounces; it is only 0.9 inches high by 3.9 inches wide and 3.9 inches deep. The Apple TV offers users an HDMI out port on the back, which is very different from any other Apple product, such s the iPhone or the iPad, which do not. It also has an Ethernet port, a micro USB port, and supports Wi-Fi 802.11n. The device also uses Apple’s own A4 processor, the same one used in the iPad and iPhone 4.

Remote Control

The Apple TV comes with a minimalist remote control in the box. The remote is housed in an aluminum casing, just as the Apple TV box is, and it has a directional pad, menu button, and a play/pause button. On the plus side for Apple fans, if they own an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, those users can use their devices as a remote control as well with a free, downloadable application. The app allows swiping through menus and using the keyboard to handle text entry, instead of trying to use the remote and the WebTV-like text entry.

Content Problems

The real problem is with the content; Apple TV offers iTunes and NetFlix, but that’s about all. It offers no apps and no Internet access. If users are using other Apple devices as a remote and have the remote control app installed, those users can play content from their devices on the TV, but that’s it. Why with market dominance a bloody fight would Apple release such a limited product? This is a second generation Apple TV, too, which really beggars the question, why it does not offer more features? Apple promises that AirPlay will be supported in future, but that remains to be seen.

The Competition: Google TV

The Google TV competitor set top box practically turns a flat screen HDTV into a full tablet computer, complete with a keyboard and a trackpad. Users can surf the web, search for content, and run any number of apps. While it would seem that Google TV has yet to take off, Apple TV simply has little to offer except for Netflix. Google TV is the only other product to compare the Apple TV to and while users can get Amazon, Pandora, Netflix and a long list of other apps downloaded to Google TV, Apple TV offers next to nothing. With Google TV, users can even access Gmail and Google Docs, as well as use it as a DVR.

Apple TV simply does not offer enough features to make it competitive with other products of its type. Maybe that is why Apple offers it for the $99 price tag, but it is hard to imagine why Apple would release a product that does so little, but it did, and while the Apple TV does Netflix really well, it does not do much else.

Footage of the just released iOS port of Mega Man X has just hit the net, and his fans are crying bloody murder.

It’s been a rough year for Mega Man fans all year, with the obvious low point being the aforementioned cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3. You’d think, the last few weeks of 2011, that they’d have it a little easy, right? Nope. Because the following has everyone all fire and brimstone once again…

Not only are fans of the original game all pissed, but so are members of the press, like Kotaku and Destructoid. Is the vitriol warranted? Yes and no.

The first issue is how it supposedly looks like ass, at least when compared to the SNES original. Which is rather perplexing since plenty of Super Nintendo games have been ported to the iPhone and iPad with no loss of graphical fidelity.

And yeah, it’s not as pretty, but it’s not that ugly either. The last time we had a portable port of the game was for the PSP, which looks far worse IMHO…

Sorry, I’ll take low rent 2D over low rent 3D any day of the week. Though another point of contention is how content that’s normally accessed by unlocking them through the course of the game can be immediately enjoyed, for the lazy and/or unskilled folks out there that are willing to pay additional monies.

Granted, Mega Man X is awfully hard, and I can’t imagine it playing very well, sans buttons. But that’s pretty obnoxious nonetheless. And like I said, the reaction has been harsh…

“Are you f*cking kidding me?”

“This is really a kick in the nuts. WTF Capcom?”

“F*ck Capcom! Please go bankrupt!”

“Capcom… you made X, you owned it, now you’re destroying it… Fortunately, developer and artists fans are currently rebuilding it in amazing versions. Fight, fans, for ever lasting X.”

“Thin ice, Capcom, you’re on very thin ice.”

“F*CK YOU CAPCOM FOR ALIENATING YOUR FANBASE YOU F*CKING THIEVING DOWNY CLASS-ASS FUCKS!!!”

“This looks freaking terrible. And this is honestly why I can never see the iOS as a legit gaming medium. Maybe for casual time killers, sure. But not for anything truly serious.”

… lol at that last comment. Whatever kid. But anyway, you get the point. And guess what? The best part: a good deal of those complaining will still buy the same game. Capcom knows this, because as everyone is well aware: fanboys are gluttons for punishment.

Though another somewhat cheesy sentiment that does have some shred of truth is how the fan community has been putting together some awfully impressive homebrew takes on Mega Man X. Like this one…

BTW, for those who want an actually faithful iOS port of a SNES game, easily one the best ever for that system, should get the recently picked up Chrono Trigger. The asking price is $10, but it’s SO worth it…

I find it really depressing that I have to write this. But it seems I have to write it.

Substantially all of the TARP funds advanced to banks have been paid back, with interest and sometimes even with a profit from sales of warrants. Most of the (much larger) extraordinary liquidity facilities advanced by the Fed have also been wound down without credit losses. So there really was no bailout, right? The banks took loans and paid them back.

Bullshit.

Suppose you buy fire insurance from Inflammable Insurance. You pay $1000 for a year of insurance. There is no fire, so you make no claim. Next year, you find a different provider offering a better price, and you switch.

Soon after your relationship has ended, you discover that Inflammable failed to pay any claims at all during the year you were insured, because all customer premiums were diverted to the Cayman Islands and then spent on kiddy porn and Pez. Were you defrauded? Do you have any cause for complaint? After all, ex post your cash flows turned out to be the same as if you had been dealt with fairly.

Of course you have been defrauded. You did not get what you had paid for. You had paid for Inflammable to bear risk on your behalf. It did not do so. The money you paid was simply stolen.

In financial markets, risk-bearing is the ultimate commodity. It is what financial market participants buy and sell. As a financial speculator, I spend exorbitant amounts of money buying out-of-the-money options to limit my downside risk. The vast majority of those options expire worthless, just like the vast majority of fire insurance policies end with no claims paid. If only someone would give me all those options for free, or sell them to me for half the market price, or reimburse the cost of the options that I never end up using, I would be rich. Seriously, given the years I’ve been in this game, I’d be pretty set if I had my option premiums back. It doesn’t seem fair at all that I am confined to a modest middle-class life because I had to buy all this insurance I never used.

Cash is not king in financial markets. Risk is. The government bailed out major banks by assuming the downside risk of major banks when those risks were very large, for minimal compensation. In particular, the government 1) offered regulatory forbearance and tolerated generous valuations; 2) lent to financial institutions at or near risk-free interest rates against sketchy collateral (directly or via guarantee); 3) purchased preferred shares at modest dividend rates under TARP; 4) publicly certified the banks with stress tests and stated “no new Lehmans”. By these actions, the state assumed substantially all of the downside risk of the banking system. The market value of this risk-assumption by the government was more than the entire value of the major banks to their “private shareholders”. On commercial terms, the government paid for and ought to have owned several large banks lock, stock, and barrel. Instead, officials carefully engineered deals to avoid ownership and control.

But still. Everything worked out, right? It turns out that banks didn’t need to use the government’s giant insurance policy. It was just a panic after all!

Bullshit.

Suppose my kid’s meth habit got the best of him. He’s needs to come up with $100K quick or his dealer’s gonna whack him. But he’s a good kid, really! Coulda happened to anyone. So I “lend” him the money, even though he has no visible means of support and the sketchiest loan sharks in town wouldn’t give him the time of day. Now I believe in bootstraps and hard work, individualism and self-reliance. So I tell my son. “Son, you are going to pay me back every penny of that loan. You are going to work it off. I have arranged with one of my golf buddies, a guy who owes me a favor or three, a job that pays $200K a year. You’d better show up every day at 9 a.m. and sit behind that desk, and get me back my money!” And he does! After a year, he’s made me whole. What a good kid.

No bail out, right? He paid me back every penny! Worked it off!

Bullshit. The opportunity I provided him, the $200K job that he would not otherwise received without my intercession was a huge grant. On the open market, if I were to accept bribes from the highest bidder to wangle the job from my friend, that opportunity would be worth more than the $100K advanced. I paid my son’s loan with my own money. I just obscured the cash flows, so my son and I can pretend and sustain our mutual self-regard and our righteous disdain for the moochers and the hippies and the riff-raff.

After assuming the banking system’s downside risk, the US government engineered a wide variety of favorable circumstances that helped banks “earn” their way back to quasi-health. The government provided famous and obvious transfers like paying unwinding AIG swaps at 100¢ on the dollar. It forced short-term yields to zero and created an environment in which medium-term interest rates would be capped for several years, granting banks a near-risk-free arbitrage for a while. It emitted trillions in excess reserves on which it continues to pay interest. It forewent investigations and prosecutions that by law it should actively pursue, and settled what enforcement it could not avoid for token fees. Then there are the things conspiracy theorists and cranks like me suspect but cannot prove: that the government and the Fed have been less than aggressive in minimizing their costs when they or entities they controls (AIG, Fannie, Freddie) transact with large banks, that they have left money on the table where doing so could be hidden in arcane accounts or justified as ordinary transaction expenses and trading losses. Large banks have enjoyed some rather extraordinary results for allegedly efficient markets, quarters with large trading profits and no or very few losing days. Government housing policy is pretty overtly subject to a constraint that interventions must not provoke loss realizations for banks carrying bad loans at inflated values, or interfere with servicing revenues. (If you think I am overconspiratorial, I’m still waiting for an innocent explanation of this, from 1991.)

Pulling back from a shell game whose details are, by design, labyrinthine, check out the big picture. Since the beginning of the 3rd quarter of 2008 (Lehman quarter), US debt held by the public increased by 84%, from $5.28T to $9.75T (as of the end of Q2 2011). Depending on where you start, the growth rate of publicly held US debt prior to Q3 2008 had been ~8% per year (starting in 1970 or 1980) or ~4.5% (starting in 1990 or 2000). The growth rate since Q3-2008 has been 22.6% per year. The United States has issued between $3T and $4T more debt than would have been predicted by any reasonable estimate prior to the financial crisis. So far.

Hyman Minsky famously described crisis stabilization as a two-step process: First, the state/central-bank steps in as lender of last resort to halt the panic. Then the state must underwrite a program of massive deficit spending in order to “validate” — Minsky’s word — the fragile capital structures and the “innovative” business practices that proliferate during periods of tranquility.

Translating into current buzzwords, when the trouble begins there is a solvency crisis. It is converted into a liquidity crisis ex post by a firehose of net spending by the state. The current crisis has followed Minsky’s script perfectly. Banks’ ability to “pay back” bailouts has depended upon continued regulatory forbearance, tacit expectations of support if shit hits the fan again, and massive government debt issuance which resuscitated assets that would otherwise be worthless.

But who has lost anything from the bailouts? Wasn’t it a win-win? This all sounds very abstract. Where are the transfers?

If the government borrowed or printed a trillion dollars and gave the money to me, would there be any losers? If you don’t think there has been a wealth transfer, if you don’t think ordinary people have lost, please call your Congressperson and ask her to cut me a trillion dollar check. In some abstract sense, this policy of giving me money would push government debt higher. But that is so very vague a cost! I promise I’d do great things with a trillion dollars. My ideas are so much cooler than Goldman Sachs’, despite all the wholesome commercials they are running.

During the run-up to the financial crisis, bank managers, shareholders, and creditors paid themselves hundreds of billions of dollars in dividends, buybacks, bonuses and interest. Had the state intervened less generously, a substantial fraction of those payouts might have been recovered (albeit from different cohorts of stakeholders, as many recipients of past payouts had already taken their money and ran). The market cap of the 19 TARP banks that received more than a billion dollars in assistance is about 550B dollars today (even after several of those banks’ share prices have collapsed over fears of Eurocontagion). The uninsured debt of those banks is and was a large multiple of their market caps. Had the government resolved the weakest of those banks, writing off equity and haircutting creditors, had it insisted on retaining upside commensurate with the fraction of risk it was bearing on behalf of stronger banks, the taxpayer savings would have run from hundreds of billions to a trillion dollars. We can get into all kinds of arguments over what would have been practical and legal. Regardless of whether the government could or could not have abstained from making the transfers that it made, it did make huge transfers. Bank stakeholders retain hundreds of billions of dollars against taxpayer losses of the same, relative to any scenario in which the government received remotely adequate compensation first for the risk it assumed, and then for quietly moving Heaven and Earth to obscure and (partially) neutralize that risk.

The banks were bailed out. Big time.
